The UK Government has now passed emergency Coronavirus legislation through both the House of Commons and House of Lords. The Coronavirus Act 2020 contains 329 pages of emergency legislation to deal with the current Coronavirus crisis and will be time-limited for a period of 2 years.
Within the Coronavirus Act there are some notable provisions for our clients and others in regard to Human Resourcing & Employment Law.
The Coronavirus Act formally enforces the right to be paid Statutory Sick Pay after 1 days absence. If a company fraudulently claims SSP, they will be liable to a fine of £3,000.
The Coronavirus Act also allows employees the right to take 2, 3 or 4 weeks volunteer leave in any 16 week period to assist with duties relating to the NHS or Social Work. In order to take this leave, an employee must have a certificate from an authorized person and will accrue annual leave during this period. There is no qualifying period. Courts and Tribunals may utilize teleconferencing or videoconferencing to carry out their functions.
Businesses may not be removed from premises by way of forfeiture.
